Celexa Lawsuit

Celexa is a dangerous antidepressant which has the tendency of causing suicidal thoughts side effects as well as severe birth defects in babies. Due to these reasons, the drug has often been a source of litigation. More recently, a lawsuit involving Lexapro and Celexa side effects has been granted class-action status.

Is Celexa safe during pregnancy?

Many doctors and researchers have been hesitant to give Celexa a clean bill of health for pregnant mothers.

A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Medication Guide recommends pregnant mothers and those women who intend to get pregnant to consult their healthcare providers before starting to take Celexa. This is because human studies that have been conducted for this drug have not yielded any substantial results to establish its safety. Therefore the FDA has designated Celexa as a Pregnancy Category C drug.

Literature available on the use of Celexa by pregnant mothers recommends that special precautions have to be followed when taking Celexa. This is especially true during the last few months of pregnancy. This also holds true for breast-feeding mothers, as the constituents of Celexa can pass through breast milk into the newborn baby. Furthermore, it is recommended that women, who become pregnant while taking Celexa, consult their healthcare provider as the drug may cause dangerous side effects in newborns.

An FDA alert of July 2006, based on the results of a controlled study, states that infants born to mothers who took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (Celexa being one of them) after the 20th week of pregnancy, were 6 times more likely to have persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) than infants born to mothers who did not take antidepressants during pregnancy.

Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN)

The condition is also known as persistent fetal circulation. In PPHN, the blood does not flow by the lungs. Oxygen does not move from the lungs to the rest of the body. Babies have low blood oxygen levels which could be a serious cause of concern. Body organs do not get optimum amount of oxygen, which in some cases may result in damage to these organs due to lack of oxygen. PPHN is therefore both a very serious condition as the baby is born and in the long-term.

In addition to the class-action lawsuit , another lawsuit has been filed against Forest Pharmaceuticals, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The case involves the death of a baby born to a mother who took Celexa during pregnancy. The baby was diagnosed with multiple heart defects at birth and had four open-heart surgeries in two weeks. The plaintiff alleges that the defendant knew about the risks of cardiac and other defects, yet marketed the drug for use in pregnant women regardless.
