Topiramate

A study by the North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry established that 3.8 percent of pregnant women using the drug gave birth to children with serious birth defects as compared to 1.3 percent of those who did not use the drug. Topiramate babies may be born with lower birth weight or cleft lip and palate disorder. Some of the symptoms of the disorder are:

  • Small notch in the lip
  • Complete split in the lip extending to the base of the nose
  • Poorly aligned teeth
  • Change in nose shape
